Starter problem

So this is the third time this has happened.

When i turn my car on i get this grinding noise like the starter keeps going. I think that that is the sound. I am not exactly sure. I shut the car off right away and turn it back on with no problem. This happened three times in the last two weeks. I remember two times were cold starts and one time was when the car was off for about an hour.

I'm at like 130k on this car.

I have a new clutch setup ready to go in (any bidders?). I was still looking for a new cable and quadrant got the firewall adjuster. I figured I might replace a starter while im at it. I really just want this to hold up until at least jan. The engine is in fair shape from what I believe. Wish i could put the 5.4 in it, just to keep my first car.

It almost sounds like you have a dead or flat spot on your flywheel. So when the starter jump and the gear tries to grab it it turns a little but not enough to turn it over. My focus had that problem. Know what I'm saying? Its hard to say with out hearing or seeing in person.

The engine starts up fine. But the sound is there when the engine is on. I turn it off right away then turn the car back on and its fine. could the flatspot still be an issue?

AHHHHHH...I see what your saying. I want to say no UNLESS the starter doesnt retract all the way or at all and the its constantly spinning or grinding against the flywheel while its trying to disengage.

I feel like the starter is getting "caught" on the flywheel. But i really dont know that noise. It just sounds bad so i turn it off right away.

I don't know much about cars, especially today" cares. We switched something like the coil. Thank did the trick, but it may have nothing with your ride

yeah, it's probably the starter acting up. it comes out easy enough. i don't think you need a whole new starter, you can get just the one part of it. kind of like an alternator, the majority of the time you just change the $0.99 brushes

how easy is this? I want to get my clutch done soon anyway. Its gotta be the original starter. It takes a few seconds you can tell its old, it takes a little longer in the cold anyway. My moms 100k buick just got a new starter and fires up almost instantly, is that what i would see if i replace the starter also?

Its very possible Brian. I would Imagine it would be pretty easy to change out your stater. A V6 doesn't take up a whole lot of room. The starter has to come off to change the clutch anyway. So I would do it all at once if you can.

did you look at the power wire to the starter? maybe it's just corroded... my '94s looks like crap, and the car was only in one snow storm 12 years ago, and a couple rain storms...

clutch isn't a big deal.

I'd offer to help aswell if I wasn't hittin the road again...depending on when you want it done by. I think Joe and I got this clutch/tranny thing down by now...lol!

I have all the parts, i was gonna get a new cable, fluids and starter. Its got a little bit of time left. It can wait, it will only go to the shop when i cant get it to move! Other then that i was gonna try for december. if not by the end of jan deff.
