lost 3rd gear

Can you fix just one gear?
Leaving the show yesterday shifting into 3rd...as I began to release the clutch I heard and felt rattling in the trans. I skipped 3rd all the way home (over an hour drive).

I appreciate any help or feedback as this car is my daily driver.

Mine had a similar incident, but I was downshifting to third. Mine turned out to be a few pieces missing off the teeth on third.

The shops I have talked to all say that once you open it up you may as well rebuild it. $600-$1000 depending on the parts that need to be replaced.
Update on the sound I am hearing: It isn't a random rattle. It is a consistent bang/bump as I release the clutch as if a spinning part is hitting but not grabbing. I have not released the clutch completely in 3rd gear for fear that I will blow the entire thing up.
THanks for all of your feedback and suggestions.

So you can physically shift it into the third gear position but no go when you let the clutch out? Sounds like the third main shaft gear got ripped apart. Unfortunately they almost always take the cluster gear with them when they go. Depending on what year the trans is the 3rd gear goes for around $125 and another $125 for the cluster..plus other random small parts and bearings at a bare minimum you're looking at $300 just to replace what's broken. To add new syncros the kit is about $175 or so..so you're in the $300-500 range for parts alone..again depending what it actually needs.

Not including labor

I can shift into 3rd BUT as I let off the clutch I hear and feel a rattle/banging. It is not random, it is timed as if it is spinning and hitting but not grabbing??? Sorry, I've never been inside a transmission before. I have not fully let off the clutch in fear that it will break further. When I did almost let off the clutch all the way it felt as if I was downshifting rather than up.
Does that make sense. I think if I let off the clutch compltetly 3rd gear (if not more) will completely explode.

Re: lost 3rd gear

This is what a broken 3rd looks like the one with no teeth. You can see the cluster gear down below got destroyed along with it. the sound that you're describing sounds similar as if your teeth are missing off your 3rd gears and a random leftover chunk of a tooth is smacking off whatever's left on the cluster gear

Or...it could be something else entirely.. Which is why I say there's no way to tell for sure until you open it up. But what you're describing is just what it sounds like to me in my opinion... That's what mine sounded like when I destroyed 3rd..my trans is pictured above lol
